STATE PUPPET THEATRE OF THE REPUBLIC OF KARELIA, Petrozavodsk, Russia
In a stage version and production of Oleg Jugzhda Andersen’s tale is shown by a modern puppet theatre including theatre of objects, shadow play show and live action. The director plays with different sizes and different puppet’s formations but doesn’t forget that «man is the measure of all things» at that point.
The action takes place in war-time: broken glasses, smoked bourgeoise stove, sounds of shots and military march outside the window… Two boys, lyricist and physicist are playing in the room, and a girl, dreaming to dance on a stage. There is a wartime and children don’t have a lot of toys: a teddy bear, a humming top, a nutcracker, puppet toys, a box of small soldiers and some knickknacks: a castle with swans, a beautiful dancing doll and a snuffbox with evil troll. The story of the tin soldier and his paper sweetheart is made as an improvisation acting of three children who play in Andersen’s characters. At the interface of actors-characters’ and puppets’ interplay new visual meanings appear.
«The Steadfast Tin Soldier» is a multilayered theatre text created by laconic and restrained production items.
The use of conceptual scenography, modern stage effects and improvisation acting principle create the effect of an up-to-the-minute performance happened right before the audience’s eyes.
The play is performed with the assistance of the Federal dedicated programme «The culture of Russia».
