«MOYRAS of PETROGRAD DISTRICT»

In the mythology of the ancient Greeks, moiras are the goddesses of fate: they decide who how to live and how long to die. The play by Konstantin Fedorov, written specifically for the puppet theater, tells the story of three Moira sisters who are in charge of the Petrogradsky district of St. Petersburg, and their wards, Petersburgers, who have no idea who controls their destinies. The Moirai are already quite old; they are tired of the long northern winters and dream of retiring to return home to hot Greece.

One day, the sisters made a serious mistake: they lost the magic scissors with which they cut the threads of lives. Now no one dies in the Petrogradsky district. And those who were destined to die, accidentally got a chance for a second — better — life.

Alexandra Lovyannikova’s performance involves puppets-gloves, but not ordinary ones, but «inverted», with legs and fingers. Each doll is made from a real glove chosen to match the character: someone is made of wool, someone is made of leather. The story unfolds against the backdrop of winter St. Petersburg, during a protracted snowstorm. Many of the buildings in the performance are mock-ups of real houses in the Petrogradsky district: this is a tribute to the playwright, who tied the fairy tale plot to the real geography of his city.
