Description

COMPANHIA DO CHAPITO, Lisbon, Portugal

Intrigued by a series of predictions made by three witches and persuaded by his ruthless and ambitious wife, Macbeth sets out on a journey of butchery and madness to gain and keep the throne of Scotland.

John Mowat directed ‘Macbeth’ with the focus as usual on communication though gesture and image, thereby breaking all language barriers and making us laugh as we question all aspects of physical and social reality.  ‘Macbeth’ is considered one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most powerful tragedies yet here it has been cleverly transformed into a hilarious comedy.  With little else other than kilts and masterly performances, the three performers recreate a dramatic story in which ambition drives a plot to murder a king and sets us off crying –  with laughter.

Companhia do Chapit? was formed in 1996 in Lisbon, Portugal. Drawing from a wide variety of influences and techniques, the company has developed a style of visual comedy that reaches out to a universal audience. Working as an ensemble, the company produce their ideas though play and improvisation, exploring and experimenting in order to find new ways of creating theatre. The company has produced numerous pieces that have toured throughout Portugal and other European countries, as well as Cape Verde, South America, the Middle East and the Far East. Since its creation in 1996, A Companhia do Chapit? has invested in the idea of being in motion that culture is lived and mobile, well travelled and laid back. The company’s first show The Crazy Travellers was a trilogy about travel by land, sea and sky. The same year it made its international debut in Macau, China. From that moment, travel and international performance has been a constant consideration for A Companhia do Chapit?. This is made possible by the kind of work we develop and it is a taken into consideration at all stages during the production of our shows.

Chapit? is a non-profit cultural association, an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), an IPSS (Private Institution of Social Solidarity) with the statute of Superior Social and Cultural Interest given by the Portuguese Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity and the Portuguese Ministry of Culture. Its main goal is to promote social integration by means of the performing arts (circus arts, dance, theatre, music, video and multimedia). Located near St. George’s Castle in Lisbon, Chapit? offers programmes for social integration that include: training in the performing arts and stage crafts (at the Escola Profissional de Artes e Of?cios do Espect?culo vocational school, evening classes and workshops); audiovisual and multimedia; international cooperation and shows (Companhia do Chapit? and independent productions).
